Cybele and Attis

Cybele was the great goddess-mother of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey), the mistress of nature with its alternating cycles of birth and death. Sound familiar? Those initiated in her secret cult celebrated the death and rebirth of her your lover Attis (no doubt in the springtime, say around Easter...), symbolizing the passing of the seasons and human existence.
